City Council Regular Meeting
Meeting Date: 09/01/2020

BACKGROUND
To enhance connectivity and create a safe pedestrian walkway for everyone, City staff plans to install an ADA compliant 6' sidewalk on Curtiss Avenue from Westchester to FM 1518.  This walkway also supports Schertz' safe schools routes initiative as it ultimately connects Samuel Clemens High School, Schertz Elementary, Allison Steel Learning Center, as well as several Community Centers such as the Library, YMCA, and Playscape.  In addition, this loop promotes commerce as it connects residential neighborhoods with businesses on Schertz Parkway, Main Street, and FM 1518.

This sidewalk project is funded in the FY 19-20 budget and part of the Sidewalk improvement plan.  Pricing for the project is based on the On-Call Concrete Repair and Replacement contract approved by Council on Res 19-R-162

The project total request is for $345,715.00 which includes a 10% contingency for  the proposal of  314,289.00 to ensure adequate budget should unknown issues arise.
GOAL
Approve the funding for the sidewalk installation on Curtiss Ave from Westchester to FM 1518.

COMMUNITY BENEFIT
This sidewalk increases connectivity for all physical abilities and bolsters the quality of life for our community by providing a safe pedestrian walkway loop that promotes enjoying the outdoors through exercise, walking to and from businesses, school, community centers, and residential neighborhoods.
