City Council Regular Meeting
Meeting Date: 09/28/2021

BACKGROUND
The Borgfeld facility was originally built in 1992 as the Schertz Kennel.  In 2014, Animal Services relocated from the facility on Borgfeld to their new location on Community Circle.  Since 2015, the facility has been empty and in need of repairs.

City Staff is currently in need of approximately 30,000 square feet for different functions across the City with an increasing demand on administrative space.  Renovating the Borgfeld facility will provide at least 2400 square feet of administrative space with the opportunity for up to 5000 square feet of useable space.

The Staff is proposing to renovate the space using budgeted FY 21-22 operations and maintenance funds from the Public Works Budget for a cost of $26.33/sqft.  New construction of a similar sized facility is approximately $300/sqft.  The current total estimate to renovate the space is $63,000.

Renovation costs are a significant savings over new construction costs and will provide much needed space for employees and services to the City of Schertz.
